Rev. Allen Mothershed

I grew up in Mississippi, and received a Masters of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. For ten years I served United Methodist Churches in Mississippi, including Tupelo First United Methodist Church.  On a sabbatical in 1995, I received a masters in Pastor Psychological from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. I worked on the Chicago North Shore as a pastoral Psychotherapist doing individual, couple’s and group therapy.  At Winnetka Congregational Church I served as the senior associate pastor for six years and then as senior pastor for seven years at First Congregational Church in Moline, IL.  My tenure at St. Matthew began in August, 2012.

“I am thrilled to be the pastor of St. Matthew United Church of Christ.  There is a unique vibrancy at St. Matthew.  We are a family and we feel the love and support we have for one another.  But our love extends to an amazing degree to our community and beyond.  We are involved in a number of local, national, and international outreach ministries that are transforming human lives, especially the most vulnerable.  That is one of the reasons I accepted a call to St. Matthew.  The other is that I could tell that children and youth are treasured at St. Matthew and are taught how to walk in the way of Jesus the Christ.  They learn here that their lives matter to God and they can make a difference.  We say at the beginning of our worship service, “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey you are welcome here” and we mean what we say.  We make a place for others in our family to belong and to be disciple on the Way of Jesus.

I have been married to Marla Kay Mothershed since 2002 and we are blessed with two children, Kira born 2004 and Luke born 2007.  We enjoy hiking, biking, tennis, and traveling as a family.
